DATA PRIVACY RIGHTS AND ENFORCEMENT – A COMPARISON OF DEVELOPMENTS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC Special EIF Outreach EventDate: Wednesday 1 February 2012 Time: 8.00-9.30 over breakfast Venue: Renaissance Brussels Hotel, Rue du Parnasse, 1050 Brussels (see map). With a new data protection proposal from the European Commission and a proposal for a Privacy Bill of Rights from the Obama Administration anticipated later in February, privacy and data protection are at the top of the transatlantic agenda. The independent Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which stands to play an important role in the new U.S. framework, has been making headlines in the past year with its landmark enforcement actions against Google and Facebook. David C. Vladeck, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, will provide his thoughts on the U.S. government’s data privacy framework and the FTC’s role in providing robust enforcement of consumers’ privacy rights. This special EIF outreach event will lay the foundation for EIF follow-up in Washington with US legislators as part of EIF’s involvement in this year’s Transatlantic Week hosted by Transatlantic Policy Network.
